Meet NCOPE resident, Abbey Sammons—Abbey is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Prosthetic-Orthotic program and calls Lafayette, Louisiana home. When she was young a family friend had a child with congenital limb loss who was unstoppable and his determination to thrive motivated Abbey in her career choice.
She’s always known she wanted to work in a profession where she would work with the human body and once she discovered prosthetics/orthotics, she was hooked. Abbey feels that O&P allows her to be active and on the go and she is excited about the challenges awaiting her in the clinic.
In April, Abbey had the opportunity to volunteer at a bilateral above knee amputee boot camp where 50+ patients were learning to walk from their stubbies all the way up to their full length prostheses. Abbey says of her experience at the boot camp, “It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had since starting my O&P career. It was amazing to be able to encourage so many people and to help them re-learn to walk again.”
